It's midsummer, and rumors about Apple's?next iPhone release are buzzing around like gnats at a picnic. Will it be 5S or 6? Will it feature a bigger display? What about the case?? no appreciable change or plastic in bright colors? Will it finally include wireless charging?

Over the years, Apple has proven itself to be almost as skilled at building anticipation for its products as it is at building innovation into those products. As we wait for this year's soon-to-be-announced release date, here's a look at the history of the iPhone.

Relay for Life honors memories, celebrates survivors of cancer

NEW ULM - The 18th Annual Brown County Relay for Life honored the memory of those diagnosed with cancer and those who had passed on Friday night at the Brown County Fairgrounds.

The event is a celebration of the Brown County Relay for Life's fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society. Cancer survivors and family members of those that were diagnosed with cancer gave testimony at the event.

This year's honorary chair was Denise Clyne of New Ulm, who grew up in St. Paul until she caught the brain infection viral meningo-encephalitis in 1976. She endured brain seizures in the right side of her brain for 20 years until receiving treatment surgery.

The participants in the Survivors Lap for the Brown County Relay for Life event on Friday walked along the luminaria (left) that were placed in memory of those who fought cancer. The luminaria were lit at sunset.

She eventual came to work at the local HyVee. In 2000, she discovered a lump in her left breast and underwent a lumpectomy at the Virginia Piper Cancer Center in Minneapolis, along with chemotherapy. She took cancer prevention medication for five years.

During her time at HyVee, she made friends with a co-worker named Scott. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with larynx cancer in 2006. He underwent surgery and chemotherapy that resulted in him needing a trach for the rest of his life. He later passed away in 2012 when his cancer returned.

In December of 2010, her breast cancer returned after years of healthy living. It metastasized to her liver, lung, bones, and a large mass on her pelvis. She praised the team at the Virginia Piper Cancer Center in New Ulm at the New Ulm Medical as incredibly supportive and instrumental in her treatment. She said she lost her hair twice in chemotherapy, but was blessed with never having to be sick.

Last February, an MRI examination of her brain revealed four areas of cancer cells. She received Gamma Knife Radio Surgery and her April MRI scans have shown good results.

She is currently undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks, along with x-rays and medication changes as needed. She said she is determined to win her battle with cancer.

Joleen Wendinger, who was recognized for her caregiver work this year, said that during her time caring for her husband Paul during his battle with cancer, they were able to overcome all kinds of hardship and exceed the expectations of doctors. She said she felt they won Paul's battle with cancer because he was able to pass away peacefully at home, surrounded by family.

The speech was followed by the Survivor's Lap around the grounds and the traditional lighting of the luminaria. Luminaria are paper bags, filled with gravel and a lighted candle, that have the name of a cancer survivor or someone who has died from cancer. They are the organization's primary fundraiser. When lit, the thousands of luminaria cause the names of cancer victims and survivors to glow and shimmer along the Survivors Lap path. More than 4,000 luminaries lined the track this year.

This year's event Survivor's Lap featured more than 200 participants and 27 teams. The combined total of funds raised over the last 17 years exceeded $1.3 million.

The event goes all night and concludes 6 a.m. today.

T-Mobile nixes down payments, ups monthly fees

NEW YORK (AP) ? T-Mobile said Friday that it is temporarily eliminating upfront payments on new phones, but it is increasing the prices for some models through higher monthly payments.

Unlike rival carriers, T-Mobile charges the full retail price of phones, spread over two years, but reduces monthly service fees for voice, text and data. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and others typically charge $200 or so up front for high-end phones and make up for the rest of the phone's cost through higher service fees over the life of a two-year contract.

Under a new payment plan introduced in March, T-Mobile charges a down payment for the phone and monthly installments until the device is paid off in two years. For instance, customers pay $146 up front for an iPhone 5 and $21 a month for two years for a total cost of $650. That's about the same price Apple charges when someone buys the phone without a two-year contract for use at another carrier.

In eliminating the down payment, starting Saturday, some phones will be cheaper. For instance, customers will be paying $600 overall for Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy S4, compared with $630 currently. Apple's iPhone 5 will be $2 cheaper, at $648 overall.

But HTC Corp.'s One will cost $600, up $40. Other higher-priced devices include Sony Corp.'s Xperia Z and BlackBerry Ltd.'s Q10. T-Mobile said it was revising prices to reflect demand and other factors.

"Every time we have a chance to change pricing, we always make adjustments," said Mike Sievert, chief marketing officer at T-Mobile. "Some are going up. Some are going down. Each and every one is going to zero down."

The promotion follows the introduction of new upgrade plans at three of the four national wireless carriers. T-Mobile started the wave about two weeks ago with its $10-a-month Jump program. For that fee, you get insurance to cover loss and damage and the right to upgrade up to twice a year. You pay a new down payment for the new phone when you upgrade, but remaining installments on the old phone are waived. As a result, it can cost you hundreds of dollars more than keeping the same phone the entire two years.

T-Mobile's elimination of down payments is part of a limited-time promotion. T-Mobile hasn't announced an end date, but Sievert described it as a "summer promotion." That means down payments are likely to return by the time the first of the Jump participants will be eligible to upgrade, six months from when they first sign up, or next January at the earliest.

Under AT&T Inc.'s Next and Verizon Wireless' Edge upgrade programs, customers pay the full retail prices for phones over 20 or 24 months, instead of the traditional way of paying just $200 up front. Unlike T-Mobile, however, neither has reduced the service fee component of phone bills, meaning customers effectively pay for the same phone twice. There's no additional monthly fee, but there's no insurance, either.

Even though Next and Edge require customers to pay more overall for phones, both waive the down payment and make T-Mobile look bad in charging it. Sievert said T-Mobile's zero-down promotion is a direct response to that perception.

The promotion applies to phones bought through T-Mobile's website, over the phone or at its retail stores. It doesn't apply to phones bought through resellers and other retailers, such as Sony's store for the Xperia Z.

iPad as universal remote

any have comments on whether or not this is a good idea? Don't have an iPad but was thinking of getting one for wife. Figured I could also use it as the universal remote for movie room. In the box that appears type 'explorer.exe' and choose 'OK'. The taskbar in windows (95+) is run by the 'shell' (taskbar, desktop icons, my computer, windows explorer etc. etc.), sometimes the 'shell' process get's itself a bit stuck, so that the taskbar dies but other explorer windows remain. Running 'explorer.exe' when it is already running will not recreate the taskbar, it will just open an new 'My Computer' window. By killing off the 'explorer.exe' process you are restarting the shell from scratch, which forces it to recreate the taskbar.

NBA Free Agency: Brandon Jennings, Nikola Pekovic, Best Available Free Agents?

The biggest names have been signed, but plenty of free agents are still available as NBA teams round out their rosters this summer.

Plenty of times a team?s fortune has swung with quick one-year or three-year deals with an under the radar player, and this year is no different. The Dwight Howards and Chris Pauls are obvious franchise cornerstones, but they also need diligent teammates willing to do the dirty work in order to create a championship squad.

Below are the five best players still on the market at each position.

PG Brandon Jennings

The Milwaukee Bucks made a qualifying offer to Jennings before free agency officially began, and said they would match any other offer for the restricted free agent. However they reportedly signed Atlanta guard Jeff Teague to a four-year $32 million deal with the Hawks can match.

Teague could be cheaper insurance for Jennings, who wants a maximum level contract after 17 points and 5.7 assists a game in four years in Milwaukee.

Even with his poor shooting numbers, Jennings has proven he can lead a team to the playoffs. If he stays he?ll have a lot more help with O.J. Mayo and Carlos Delfino helping him out in the backcourt.

SG Gary Neal

Neal also got a qualifying offer from the San Antonio Spurs, but his hot shooting in the playoffs might turn into a much bigger pay day. He shot 41 percent from deep in the Western Conference Finals and the Finals, including six three-pointers in the Spurs 36-point Game Three route over the Heat.

Teams always need plenty of long-range shooting, and Neal showed he could single-handedly outscore Miami.

SF Stephen Jackson

He?s had his issues, and was released by the Spurs before the playoffs, but very few players are as versatile as Jackson. The market for small forwards is very weak this year, which could be to his benefit. A number of top teams should reach out, and Jackson could earn a one or two-year deal for more than the veteran?s minimum.

PF Jason Maxiell

Maxiell is a serviceable veteran who can play both forward positions. He?d be a solid fit for any team looking for a back-up. His age, 30, might be of some concern, but Maxiell would fit in nicely as a role player for a number of contenders at a bargain price.

C Nikola Pekovic

Pekovic reportedly wants to stay with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but his incredible breakout season of 16.3 points and 8.8 boards a game turned him into one of more coveted centers on the market.

According to the Pioneer Press, Minnesota has to contend with Portland and Atlanta for Pekovic, but the T-Wolves clearly have a leg up on everyone else. It will be interesting to see how willing Pekovic is to stay in Minnesota if he doesn?t like the team?s offer.

BMW Active Tourer Outdoor Concept: A Car for Cyclists That's Not for Cyclists

At first glance, BMW's Active Tourer Outdoor concept makes a fair amount of sense for bicyclists. Take a compact car, add relatively cavernous cargo space, line it with ruggedized materials, throw in an hybrid powertrain, and the end result is?as the name suggests?the Ultimate Driving Machine for cyclists?offering them a perfect car for zipping up to isolated, windy mountain roads.

It's even got a fold-out rack that allows for storage of two bikes in the back with plenty of room to spare. But while this feature makes it noticeably harder for bike thieves to do what they do, it also means the BMW makes little sense for people who ride with any sort of regularity.

The rack seems to be too clever by half: Because car's roof is so low, making the bikes fit inside means riders need to remove (or at the very least, fully lower) the seatposts. The extra step sounds trivial, as any seatpost secured with a quick-release takes seconds to remove. But in practice, every single time you mount up you'll need to spend an extra five minutes adjusting your seat to the right height. It's like having to readjust the driver's seat every time you get behind the wheel.?It's a minor annoyance that makes a major difference for this could've-been-great concept.?

These people are not cyclists.

And really, stashing a bike on a car is a non-problem to begin with. No matter the vehicle, there exists a compatible bike rack?most which can store bikes easier and quicker than BMW's design. Some?as professional cyclist Peter Sagan demonstrates?don't even require you to get off your bike.

The BMW Active Tourer Outdoor concept is almost a good idea. There's yet to be a car designed specifically for cyclists in the way BMW has done with this concept, so we applaud the effort. But the execution falls short at the car's most important feature?like putting holes in a bucket to make it lighter.

Rothschild asks watchdog to look into Bumi: source

LONDON (Reuters) - Financier Nat Rothschild has asked Britain's financial market watchdog to look into whether Indonesia-focused coal miner Bumi made misleading statements to the market, a source said.

After two years of bitter boardroom battles and a probe into financial irregularities, Bumi, co-founded by Rothschild and the Bakrie family, is now seeking to part ways with the Bakries in a $278 million deal.

The deal, first announced last year, is still being hammered out and the length of negotiations has raised questions over the Bakrie family's ability to come up with the cash to pay for the separation.

A source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Monday that Rothschild, whose relationship with both Bumi's board and the Bakrie family has soured, has written to Britain's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to ask them to investigate the company.

Rothschild owns a 14.8 percent stake in the company according to Reuters data.

British lawmakers earlier in July launched an inquiry into resources companies which will examine corporate governance issues amongst London-listed companies, partly prompted by corruption probes at companies like Bumi.

Under the separation deal, the Bakries have agreed to exchange cash and their shares in London-listed Bumi for the group's minority holding in Jakarta-listed Bumi Resources .

Recent media reports have, however, suggested that the Bakries are in talks regarding an alternative to the separation deal with Bumi, including a sale of their stake to Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Trading in Bumi's shares has been suspended since April after irregularities found in the accounts of a key subsidiary forced it to delay its full-year results.

"We never confirm or deny an investigation," a spokesman for the FCA said on Monday.

Bumi declined to comment.

James Bond star Pierce Brosnan tried everything in his power to help his cancer-stricken daughter in the last years of her life, according to a close family friend.

Charlotte Brosnan passed away on June 28 after a battle with ovarian cancer, the same disease that killed her mother Cassandra Harris, the Irish actor's first wife, 22 years earlier.

According to Lisa Paulsen, president of the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Brosnan's longtime pal, the Hollywood star had hoped Charlotte would beat the cancer and pushed to get her into the latest clinical trials.

Paulsen tells People.com, "Pierce was willing to pick up the phone and call anyone, go anywhere, take her anywhere, do anything for her at anytime. He was desperate. After Cassie passed away, Pierce became a fierce champion and ambassador to all things related to women's cancer research."

Paulsen has consoled her friend by assuring him his efforts haven't been in vain: "I told Pierce, 'Despite the fact that Charlotte didn't end up benefiting from long-term new ovarian cancer therapies, so many things that you have done have led to so many discoveries'. He's a remarkable and loving father, and Charlotte was such a trooper."

Brosnan, who married second wife Keely Shaye Smith in 2001, paid tribute to his daughter shortly after her death, praising Charlotte for fighting the disease with "grace and humanity, courage and dignity".

She was Harris' daughter from a previous marriage, but Brosnan adopted her and her brother Christopher as his own after their father's death in 1986.

Samsung ships 20 million Galaxy S4s

Two months on, Samsung's shifted 20 million devices worldwide

Samsung has shifted 20 million Galaxy S4 smartphones in the just over two months since the device first went on sale, company co-CEO JK Shin has told the Korean press. To put that in perspective, the first month of availability for the S4 yielded 10 million shipments, while last year's Galaxy S3 took 100 days to reach the 20 million milestone.

Of course, shipping a phone isn't the same as selling it to an end-user. However shipped devices have to go somewhere, and the number shows that Samsung's partners at the very least are keen to snap up the device.

Samsung also reported Galaxy S4 sales of 500,000 in its domestic market of South Korea.

Stocks rose on Monday to kick off the first day of the third quarter with a modest rally, boosted by a pair of better-than-expected economic reports.

Traders said the S&P 500 was hitting an area of resistance around its 50-day moving average of 1,624. Meanwhile, protest in Egypt also put pressure on the market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which at one point in the day was 150 higher, eased back to close up 65 points, at 14,974.96, led by United Tech and American Express.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also rallied. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slipped near 16.

Most key S&P sectors were higher, led by materials and techs, while utilities slipped.

Major averages closed higher for the second quarter and the Dow posted its strongest first-half performance of any year since 1999. So far for the year, the Dow has surged more than 14 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have spiked more than 13 percent each.

"History is a little bit in our favor?when you have a good first-half, the second half tends to show some follow through, but this may be a difficult year to figure out because we'll have the lag of sequestration, everyone trying to figure out where the Fed is going," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services.

On the economic front, manufacturing activity edged higher in June to 50.9, according to the Institute for Supply Management, a hair above expectations for 50.5. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the sector. However, hiring in the sector fell to the lowest since September 2009.

And construction spending rose 0.5 percent in May to an annual rate of $874.9 billion, rising to its highest level in nearly four years, according to the Commerce Department.

Japanese shares were boosted by a survey which showed corporate sentiment had turned positive for the first time in two years, as optimism about Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's radical stimulus policies offset concerns about recent market volatility.

"The risk is that the economy may be doing well enough that it actually dis-incentivizes the drive for structural reform. That would certainly lead to a dampening of market sentiment," said Alistair Newton, senior political analyst at Nomura.

However, data from China showed that industrial activity continued to decline in June, amid concerns about overcapacity and weak demand.

"I think the story for China is basically that there is not any story left. Economic activity has peaked and we think that data will surprise on the downside," said Sailesh Jha, chief strategist at Arcus Capital Singapore.

This week will be an extremely light on earnings, ahead of the official start of the second quarter earnings season on July 4. No major companies are expected to report results before the start of trade on Monday.

Ex-KPMG partner pleads guilty in trading case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A former partner at the giant accounting firm KPMG LLC pleaded guilty Monday to a securities fraud charge that authorities said involved providing insider information to a friend who plied him with cash, a Rolex watch and other luxury items.

Scott London entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to the felony count that carries a maximum 20-year prison term. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 21. His attorney could argue for a lesser sentence.

Prosecutors said London gave privileged information to friend and jewelry store owner Bryan Shaw over several years.

Shaw then used the information to trade in advance of announcements for KPMG clients such as Herbalife Ltd. and Skechers USA Inc., authorities said. He is estimated to have reaped more than $1 million in profits.

Shaw has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and could face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced. In his plea agreement, London acknowledged that he disclosed inside information to Shaw regarding at least 14 separate earnings announcements or acquisitions for KPMG clients.

London discovered that he was the target of an investigation when the FBI came to his home early this year with a picture of him accepting cash from Shaw, according to his lawyer, Harland Braun. London then spoke with investigators for three hours.

After the plea hearing, Braun said London's motivation was personal, trying to help his longtime friend Shaw when his jewelry business was foundering.

"The families went on vacations together," said Braun. "Shaw said his business was in deep trouble and Scott did something stupid to help him."

The lawyer said London received payments and gifts from Shaw totaling about $50,000 over two years and believed his friend had made no more than $200,000 on his trades. London was shocked when he found out that Shaw had made $1.2 million, Braun said.

A brokerage firm, suspecting irregularities in Shaw's trades, contacted the FBI and Securities Exchange Commission. Shaw then agreed to cooperate with authorities in wiretapping and photographing his friend. The men were photographed exchanging a paper bag of cash in an alley near Shaw's Encino jewelry store, authorities said.

After London was confronted by investigators, he acted quickly to make it clear he was the only person involved in leaking information from the company, Braun said, explaining a prolonged investigation could have damaged the company and its clients.

"He put his clients and his firm first and decided to do the right thing," Braun said.

London had a distinguished 30-year career at KPMG. He supervised more than 500 accounting professionals at the firm and personally handled audits for major KPMG clients. He will no longer be allowed to practice as a CPA.

The SEC is seeking unspecified penalties and restitution against London and Shaw.

Egypt must engage in 'serious national dialogue', U.N. says

GENEVA (Reuters) - The U.N. human rights office called on President Mohamed Mursi on Tuesday to listen to the demands of the Egyptian people and engage in a "serious national dialogue" to defuse the political crisis.

Rupert Colville, spokesman of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, also said the role of the military, which gave Mursi a 48-hour ultimatum on Monday to resolve the impasse after mass anti-government protests, was crucial.

"We call on the president of Egypt to listen to the demands and wishes of the Egyptian people expressed during these huge protests over the past few days, and to address key issues raised by the opposition and by civil society in recent months," he told a news briefing in Geneva.

"We urge all political parties and social groups in Egypt to urgently engage in a serious national dialogue in order to find a solution to the political crisis and prevent an escalation of violence."

Asked about the role of the military, Colville said: "We're talking hopefully about a newly developing democracy in Egypt, so obviously what the military does or doesn't do is crucial. Nothing should be done that would undermine democratic processes in the country."

Mursi has rebuffed the army ultimatum to force a resolution, saying on Tuesday he had not been consulted and would pursue his own plans for national reconciliation.

"Egypt's democracy is obviously very fragile and nobody wants to see it collapse or fall apart in some way," Colville told Reuters Television.
