Angry Birds racing toward a new game

9 hrs.

Is there nowhere their sharp talons can't reach? The Angry Birds have taken wing on Earth and in outer?space. And now it appears they may be flapping their way to ... a race track?

Rovio has launched a website?teasing what appears to be a new racing-themed game called "Angry Birds Heikki."

Wait ... a new game so soon after the launch of?"Angry Birds Space?" Well, more accurately, it's "an innovative and novel merchandise and webgame partnership."

At least, that's how the website?belonging to?Finnish Formula 1 star Heikki Kovalainen (for whom the game is named) describes the game, which is scheduled to launch June 18.

For its part, Rovio hasn't revealed any details about the new?webgame. But it seems highly unlikely the company is planning to release anything that resembles a truly new Angry Birds title. What seems more likely is that "Angry Birds Heikki" will be a branded spinoff along the lines of "Angry Birds Rio." Same game mechanics. Different packaging. Brand new merchandising opportunities!

Also, Heikki plans to wear an Angry Birds-themed helmet when he's flying around the racetrack.

Speaking of new merchandising opportunities ... Rovio has also partnered with Finnish jewelry company Primesmith to create a line of fancy Angry Birds-themed jewelry.

That's right, for a mere $290, you can have the Mighty Eagle wrapped around your finger.

pitcher gets first win since April 16 as Philadelphia prevails 8-7

updated 12:45 a.m. ET May 18, 2012

CHICAGO - Roy Halladay earned his first win in a month to help the Philadelphia Phillies keep rolling.

Halladay threw eight strong innings for his first win since April 16 and the Phillies held on for an 8-7 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.

Philadelphia has won five straight and six of seven and is over .500 for the first time since its Opening Day win.

"It took us awhile to get back to .500," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Now we have to stay there and move on."

Halladay (4-3) had lost three straight decisions to match a career high, but held the Cubs to three runs and scattered seven hits. The two-time Cy Young winner has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts this season.

"To put together five games and get ourselves at or above (.500) is important," said Halladay. "I think sometimes when you start thinking about it too much, it's hard to put together a run like that. So now that we have it out of the way we can get to a point where we're not worrying about it."

Chicago's Welington Castillo's stroked a two-out, three-run double in the ninth against Phillies reliever Jake Diekman to close the gap to two runs. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon came on and allowed an RBI single to Darwin Barney, but got Reed Johnson on a grounder to third for his 11th save of the season.

While Halladay ended his modest skid, Cubs starter Chris Volstad (0-6) suffered his 19th straight start without a win. He lasted just two innings, allowing four runs, six hits and three walks. Volstad threw 58 pitches, a total Halladay didn't reach until there was one out in the sixth.

"I know it's in there - it's just a matter of tapping into it and finding it at this point," said Volstad. "I've done it before. I've thrown beautiful games in the big leagues before. It's in there. Just got to tap into it."

Carlos Ruiz continued his strong start to the season with three RBI and his sixth career four-hit game to raise his batting average to .363. Ruiz leads NL catchers with 27 RBIs and is 9 for 14 over his last four games. He even stole his first base of the season on the back end of a double steal in the first.

"I feel great," said Ruiz. "When you feel great at home plate, you're going to have a lot of good at-bats. I feel relaxed and I see the ball well."

"To me he's the best catcher in the National League and we've said that for years," said Halladay. "Unfortunately, you've got to hit to get that notoriety and he's doing that now. Hopefully people take notice."

Jimmy Rollins had two hits, a walk and scored three runs. Hunter Pence added a two-run single.

The Phillies have struggled offensively to start the season without two of their best hitters all season. Chase Utley is out with patella tendonitis and Ryan Howard is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon.

"If we can play good enough without them--our lineup and our defense is going to get much better," said Manuel.

The Cubs may have lost three straight, but Volstad hasn't won since July 10, 2011. He's gone 0-11 during his drought with a 5.40 ERA. His ERA rose to 7.46 for this season and it could have been worse -- the Phillies stranded five runners during his two innings.

In addition to the bases-clearing double, Castillo homered and drove in a career-high four runs.

Volstad's run support has been the lowest in baseball during his skid among pitchers with at least 15 starts, but his results have been increasingly poor in recent outings. He's allowed 15 runs over his last 17 innings, with 19 hits, eight walks and just four strikeouts.

Halladay had lost five of his last six games against Chicago before dominating Thursday's game. He even chipped in with two hits and a run at the plate for his third career multi-hit game.

Starlin Castro hit a solo home run and drove in two runs for Chicago. David DeJesus had two hits and a run, extending his hitting streak to nine games.

Notes: Phillies 2B Chase Utley reported no problems after taking grounders for the first time this season before Wednesday's game. Utley has spent the entire season on the disabled list because of patella tendinitis in his right knee. No timetable has been established for his return. ... C Geovany Soto was a late scratch from the Cubs' lineup due left knee inflammation and was replaced by Castillo. Soto is listed as day-to-day. ... Before the game, the Cubs selected the contract of right-hander Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa and optioned lefty Scott Maine to Iowa. Parker was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in the minors and converted all five of his save opportunities. He made his debut in Thursday's game, striking out Ty Wigginton to begin his big-league career, but allowed three unearned runs on his own throwing error in the eighth. ... Phillies 3B Placido Polanco sat out with a bruised left knee. He left Wednesday's game after fouling a pitch off his leg, something he's done several times over the last week.

White: Largest Car Rental Agencies in World | Travel and Leisure

Large international car rental agencies are easily recognized because they have been around for decades. They have branches around the globe and often offer franchise opportunities. All of these well-known brands coordinate international rentals through online services that allow renters to comparison shop before booking a rental.

Hertz

Hertz is the largest global car rental agency with nearly 10,000 branches in over 145 countries around the world. It is also the oldest, having been established in the United States in 1918. One of the most interesting aspects of Hertz is its ?Fun Collection? which allows people to rent racing and high-end sports cars. These cars are available at select airport-based Hertz rental agencies. Hertz also has a ?Green Collection? for environmentally-conscious renters. These include hybrids and electric vehicles.

Avis Rent A Car

As the second largest car rental agency in the world, it has a major presence in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Avis is often associated with airports because they are a major provider of cheap car rental for travelers, both business and leisure, who pick up their cars at the airport. In addition, the company opened the very first airport-based car rental agency.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise is part of the largest car rental network that currently exists in the world. The network includes Alamo Rent A Car, National Car Rental, and Europacar. Enterprise was established in 1957. With nearly 7,000 locations in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany, it has a strong international presence.

Alamo Rent A Car

Alamo is now owned by the Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, but it still operates as an independent car rental business. It was established in 1974 and was the first car rental company to offer unlimited free mileage to its customers who were primarily leisure travelers. It currently has more than 1,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, Africa, and throughout the Asian-Pacific area. Travelers can take advantage of nearly 160 self-serve kiosks across the United States. Approximately 15 million drivers use their services annually.

National Car Rental

Along with Alamo, National Rental is a member of the Enterprise family. It was established in 1954 and now has over 3,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asian-Pacific, Europe, Australia, and Africa. They were the first car rental company to offer one-way car rentals, flat rates, and a frequent-renter program to customers. Customers can get cheap car rental rates from these large rental agencies. In addition to daily specials and regular discounts, customers benefit from larger agencies because they typically offer lower base rates.

EzPayCheck payroll software?s new feature speeds up payroll for varying groups of employees and contractors by avoiding unnecessary changes to settings.

More Details about Payroll software, accounting software here.

Tweet This New updates to ezPayCheck 2012 payroll software include a "Duplicate Company" feature that makes writing checks for 1099 contractors more easy and efficient than ever. Other updates include improvements to the data export capability.

The Duplicate Company feature permits customers to create a new paycheck account with just a few clicks of the mouse. Multiple paycheck accounts are useful for businesses and organizations that need to write checks for multiple groups of employees or contractors with differing tax and withholding needs. For example, since taxes aren't withheld for 1099 contractors, the easiest way to set up checks for these payouts is to create a new account.

Since all the business and banking information is most likely the same, ezPayCheck 2012 payroll software now streamlines the process by duplicating a company's information into a new account with one click. From there, users simply set the tax and withholding parameters required for that account, enter recipients' information, and start printing checks. A recent post to the Halfpricesoft.com help blog explains how to use the feature: http://www.halfpricesoft.com/business-blog/post/2012/04/18/How-to-Handle-Payroll-Tasks-for-Both-W2-Employee-and-1099-Contractors.aspx

"Helping small businesses streamline their accounting tasks is at the heart of the Halfpricesoft.com mission," said company founder Dr. Ge. "We are continually adding great features like this that take the burden out of payroll and other accounting tasks, so businesses can focus on their mission."

Version 3.2.8 of ezPayCheck is now available online at Halfpricesoft.com. The updated version is free for customers who have already purchased ezPayCheck 2012. Users of ezPayCheck 2011 can purchase the 2012 update package that includes all of the most recent updates.

Recent updates to this popular payroll software also include enhancements to the export capabilities that enable ezPayCheck payroll software users to generate 1099 tax forms more easily. While ezPayCheck supports printing of W-2 and W-3 forms, it does not support printing Forms 1099 and 1096. The new data export enhancements make ezPayCheck easier to use with Halfpricesoft.com's ezW2 or other software for printing Forms 1099 and 1096.

Affordable, full-featured payroll software for any size business
Priced at just $89 per installation, ezPayCheck payroll software is affordable for any size business. Additionally, ezPayCheck is designed to be extremely easy to use. After a stop at the Smithsonian on Thursday, Ms. White will visit the zoo one day later to indulge her passion: animal watching. She's looking forward to viewing the fertility-challenged?pandas and a harmonica-playing elephant, among other animals.

"My interest in animals started in the womb," the 90-year-old actress told The Associated Press. "I think my mother's and father's started in the same place. They were animal nuts long before I came along."

Photo Gallery: Family dogs!

When White was young, her family had pet Pekingese ? an "unappreciated little toy dog" that is incredibly intelligent, she said.

During the Depression, her father starting building radios to make some extra money. But most people couldn't afford to buy radios, she said, so her father would trade them ? usually for more dogs. At one point, they wound up with 11 dogs in the house.

"Now the radios didn't eat, but the dogs did," White said. "It was not really his best business venture."

Even at 90, White continues to keep a busy schedule. Her NBC show "Off Their Rockers" about seniors playing pranks on young people was just renewed for another season. She also has a TV Land sitcom, "Hot in Cleveland."

White lives in Brentwood, Calif., with her golden retriever named Pontiac, who used to be a guide dog.

"I like to think of it as the Indian chief and not the car," she said of her pet's namesake. "As a matter of fact, when the car company went out of business, I sat him down and I said, 'Oh Pontiac, it wasn't anything you did, sweetie.' "

In Washington, White will visit a sold-out crowd Thursday at the Smithsonian Associates, an educational division of the museum complex. And she will sign copies of her book, "Betty and Friends: My Life at the Zoo."

It's a mostly picture book compiled over the years with facts about animals. Since 1974, White has served as a trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. So she gives readers a tour of animals at the Los Angeles Zoo and many other leading zoos across the country.

She closes her book with parting shots of a giraffe's behind, followed by a bear's behind.

When White has a chance to visit a zoo, she said she likes to stay for a long time and watch the animals relax. She wrote her book to let people know about all the good zoos do.

"So many people say, 'Oh, I hate zoos. I want all the animals to be back in their natural habitat,'" she said. "Well, you know what we've done to their natural habitat.

Are you a Helicpter Parent? Take our quiz!

"Without zoos, we would have lost already so many species."

White says she's fascinated by nearly every creature, even snakes, and has a hard time naming favorites. She does love elephants, bears and poodles, though, to name a few.

On Friday, the Smithsonian's National Zoo will roll out the red carpet to give White a look at their research efforts behind the scenes. She will also sign copies of her book.

Zookeepers plan to show her the Asian elephants up close, including Shanthi who plays harmonica with her trunk, as well as the popular pandas, the great apes and the Panamanian golden frog. The zoo is leading an effort to fight a fast-spreading fungus blamed for wiping out dozens of amphibian species.

Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said the scientists and animal keepers are excited to host White.

"It's very personal for us because she's beloved by millions," she said. "For my colleagues to know that someone who actually cares about them and cares about their work conserving species is coming here ... We're really honored, quite frankly."

Home Staging: Yes, it is Necessary - Ezarticles.us

Selling a house in Austin used to not be as big of a challenge as it is today, and ?home staging? was a foreign concept to most middle-class people. Many years ago, before the foreclosure crisis, homeowners had little difficulty getting their houses sold. Their main responsibilities as sellers revolved around keeping their yards maintained and their houses tidy. Thanks to the influx of cheap houses flooding the Austin market from foreclosures, competition for house sales has gone through the roof. Homeowners and real estate agents are doing all they can to get that edge in and get their properties sold.

?Home staging? is not a new term, but in the past, it is a concept that was reserved primarily for high-end and luxury home sales. It is a technique used to highlight the strengths of a home and downplay its weaknesses and appeal to the widest range of prospective buyers. Real estate agents and homeowners are not necessarily design-savvy and often seek the help of professional home stagers in order to get the property showing in the best light possible.

Home staging in Austin is a necessity, thanks to the real estate market. Professional home stagers prepare a home for sale, eliminating clutter, rearranging furniture, removing clutter, or even changing paint color and bringing in new furniture and decor. All of these activities are geared towards improving the first impressions of prospective home buyers and ultimately snagging a sale. First impressions are key to selling your home, and professional home staging services in Austin are well-versed in features potential homebuyers notice and what should and should not be highlighted. Any house on the market should be presented at its very best in order to increase the likelihood of a sale.

Most real estate agents are now clued in to the necessity of home staging, and as a result, most agents will likely refer homeowners to home stagers in Austin that they work with or will hire the home stagers themselves. In fact, many real estate agents view home staging as part of advertising the property and set aside a portion of their marketing budget for home staging. The advantage of hiring home staging through your real estate agent is that these stagers are pre-screened and highly recommended and typically deliver effective results.

If your real estate agent does not work with a home staging business in Austin (which is unusual these days) you still would do well to hire one if you wish to sell your home. Many home stagers are more than happy to provide estimates for their services and provide an idea of what work is required to go into the staging of your home. Your home could require anything from a simple rearrangement of furniture and a fresh coat of paint to new furniture and an investment in a large storage unit. As with any service, it is a good idea to shop around and get several estimates and rely on referrals.

Airlines report emissions to EU

The vast majority of airlines have conformed with EU rules on reporting carbon dioxide emissions, the European Commission has said.

From next year, aircraft emissions will be included in the EU carbon market in an attempt to increase efficiency.

The EU required airlines to report by March on 2011 emissions as a "dry run"; all did, bar 10 from China and India.

The issue is controversial, with China telling airlines not to take part and US firms mounting a legal challenge.

Some commentators have suggested the outcome could be a full-scale trade war, even though the measure will add only about $3 to the price of a trans-Atlantic flight.

The EU has said it will suspend the requirement to include all flights beginning or ending in the EU in the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) if other countries can agree a genuinely global mechanism that will charge airlines for the contribution they are making to global warming.

Although aviation accounts for only about 2% of global CO2 emissions, it is the fastest-rising sector, and there are fewer technical options for constraining emissions than in areas such as electricity generation, home heating and land transport.

'Dry run'

The requirement for airlines to report 2011 emissions by March this year was a dry run for next year, when the 2012 emissions they report by March 2013 will enter the ETS.

Failure to comply at that stage will land the airlines with penalties of 100 euros per tonne of CO2 emitted, and a ban from EU airspace if they refuse to pay.

EU member states have sent letters to the 10 Chinese and Indian airlines that missed the 31 March deadline requiring them to submit their data by mid-June.

Financial penalties are likely to be sought if they do not.

The European Commission calculates that the 10 airlines account for only 3% of the total basket of emissions caused by flights beginning or ending in the EU.

In February, 23 countries that had debated whether to challenge the legality of the EU move under the Chicago Convention, the international aviation treaty, decided not to press ahead.

However, they have left the option open for the future.

EU climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard also revealed that emissions from sectors covered by the ETS shrank by more than 2% during the course of 2011.

"This good result shows that the ETS is delivering cost-effective emissions reductions," she said.

"It also emphasises why the ETS remains the engine to drive low-carbon growth in Europe."

However, at just under 6 euros ($7.70) per tonne, the carbon price remains far too low to drive significant investment in cleaner technology or practices.

Ms Hedegaard confirmed that the commission is seeking to withdraw a batch of pollution permits from the market in order to drive the price higher.

'Hundreds' of Cablevision iO TV on-demand rentals now last 48 hours, procrastinators rejoice

ImageLast we heard from Cablevision, it was bringing its Optimum App live TV streaming to Windows and Macs. Shifting directions to its more "traditional" cable offerings, the company now has good news for folks who've been generally bummed out about the 24-hour viewing window allotted with movie rentals on its iO TV service. Just in time for your weekend movie marathon, the company has announced that "hundreds" of its on-demand movie rentals will now last for 48 hours with unlimited viewing -- huzzah! As usual, content pricing starts at three bucks, and you'll be pleased to know that all that extra time comes at no additional cost to your subscription. Better yet, the amount of titles part of the deal to grow over time, and you'll find all the details in the press release after the break. Perhaps most notable is all the time you'll have to grab more microwaveable popcorn.

Spectrum Interactive brings WiFi hotspots to London's phone boxes

Spectrum Interactive brings WiFi hotspots to London's phone boxes

London's red telephone boxes are iconic, sure, but just how relevant can they be in this century? Spectrum Interactive has a solution that both ensures their preservation and provides customers in search of internet a free ticket online. The company has converted some 1,800 pay phones throughout London into WiFi hotspots, offering passersby a free connection so long as they provide their mobile numbers and download an e-coupon for a nearby store. Spectrum initially began testing the program with the help of Nokia late last year, and while it's amassed an impressive number of WiFi access points, it's lost the support of its Finnish partner, and is still assessing how willing local businesses are to pay for getting coupons in the service. On top of that, there's the whole issue of how many people will think to scope out phone booths rather than, say, an internet cafe. Here's hoping Spectrum has some very flashy signs on the windows.

?King Mo? Lawal signs one-of-a-kind deal with TNA wrestling and Bellator (VIDEO)

After being released by Strikeforce, former light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal has signed with both TNA professional wrestling and Bellator. Both groups have a partnership with Spike, making this deal possible.

"This deal is a dream come true for me," Lawal said. "Bjorn [Rebney, Bellator CEO] and Dixie [Carter, TNA president] have given me the opportunity to engage in my two great loves, mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, at the same time.? And, to have it all on Spike TV is really Buttercream icing on a big ole cake ? not that whipped cream stuff either!"

He will begin appearing with TNA Impact this summer. When Bellator moves from MTV2 to Spike in 2013, Lawal will return to mixed martial arts.

It's a perfect fit for Lawal, who has world-class amateur wrestling credentials and enough showmanship to fit in well among the pro wrestling world. His fight entrances often used props and dancers, and he wore a crown and a cape to the cage. Lawal also showed off his pro wrestling chops with Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier in November of 2009.

This contract puts to the end of a turbulent beginning of 2012 for Lawal. He contracted a life-threatening staph infection after knee surgery. His victory over Lorenz Larkin was overturned by the Nevada Athletic Commission for a positive drug test, and he was suspended from MMA for nine months. After the hearing to appeal his suspension, Lawal called a commissioner a racist [expletive], and was cut from Strikeforce. Though he apologized personally to the commissioner, he was still not invited back to the Zuffa-owned promotion.

He doesn't see a scenario where he will return to Zuffa through Strikeforce or the UFC:

"I'm not going to wait for nobody. If somebody comes to me with something that is good and a great deal, I'm going to take the best deal. And right now, the Bellator deal is the best deal you can possibly get. With Bellator and Impact Wrestling, that's the best deal you can possibly get, and I took it."

How will "King Mo" do as a pro wrestler and fighter? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Hollande's hometown says goodbye to Fran?ois, hello to Monsieur le Pr?sident

French President-elect Fran?ois Hollande spent election weekend in Tulle, where he got his political start and had a reputation as an approachable, hands-on local official.

For the next five years, France?s president-elect Fran?ois Hollande of the Socialist Party will go by ?Monsieur le Pr?sident.??But in this central France town of about 16,000, where he has been in politics for about 30 years, he will always be known as ?Fran?ois.? Residents here know him by his first name ? and he knows theirs.?

Mr. Hollande toured polling stations in Tulle and other nearby villages on election day. As was his habit when he was a local elected leader here, Hollande visited Tulle?s two markets on May 5, the day before the election, asking shoppers and local food producers how they were doing, shaking men?s hands, and kissing ladies on the cheeks amid a crowd of reporters.

The atmosphere was lighthearted and optimistic, with Hollande ahead of Nicolas Sarkozy in the polls, but some residents worried that it might well be the last time they saw "Fran?ois"?at the markets.?As president, he would have very little time, if any, to come visit them.?

Although not from the area originally, Hollande has been a political fixture there for decades. He served as a representative in the lower chamber of? parliament?for Corr?ze, the rural area where Tulle sits, from 1988 to 1993 and again from 1997 until now. He was president of Corr?ze?s general council ? a position equivalent to county manager ? from 2008 until now and served as mayor of Tulle from 2001 to 2008.?

While Hollande walked the open-air market by the town?s cathedral on the unexpectedly sunny day, one petite and elegant older lady waited for him near the market entrance.?Wearing a red dress and a white wool cardigan with gold buttons, the older lady had been standing there for over an hour, repeatedly asking reporters whether they knew what time ?Fran?ois? would come.

When Hollande finally got close to her after posing for photographs with supporters, she tried to catch his attention as he spoke to someone else.??Will you invite me to the Elys?e?? she called out, referring to France?s presidential palace.?Hollande didn?t hear her over the cheering supporters and journalists shouting questions.?

Walking along the market stands soon after, Hollande told reporters that just because he was likely to become president didn?t mean he would forget those who live here, and that even if he was less available, Tulle residents should be reassured that one of their own would be leading the country.

?Tulle residents won?t miss me,? Hollande said. ?If I lose, they will see me and if I win they will see me even more.??

On election night, about an hour after the announcement of his win, Hollande gave his first presidential address here, right by the cathedral, only a few feet away from the open-air market. Just before he concluded his speech, he thanked his first constituents.

?Finally, I greet my department of Corr?ze,? he said, to which the crowd responded with nearly 30 seconds of chants and applause. ?I owe you everything.?

Hollande was elected president with 51.63 percent of the votes nationally, according to results published by France?s Interior Ministry. He scored 65 percent of the vote in Corr?ze and 76 percent in Tulle.

Rihanna On Mend After Flu-Related IV

After 'Battleship' star tweets photo of an IV in her arm, source says she had a fever and flu 'but is fine now.'

Celebrities: They're just like us! Even the most famous pop stars catch the flu bug every now and then — at least, that's what seems to have been ailing Rihanna recently.

The 24-year-old singer issued a colorful complaint about feeling under the weather via Twitter over the weekend, and then surprised her 18 million followers with the photographic proof of her unidentified illness Tuesday with a Twit pic that showed RiRi in bed with an IV in her arm.

According to People, a source close to Rihanna said the singer is on the mend and was not suffering from anything serious: "She had a fever and flu since last week and needed an IV, but is fine now."

Not that we're qualified to offer a diagnosis here at MTV News, but judging from all the traveling, performing and promotion Rihanna has been involved in during the past month leading up to the release of her first movie, "Battleship," as well as her performance on "SNL," it seems likely the young woman was simply worn out. Here's hoping she takes some actual time off for rest and relaxation.

Meanwhile, we only have to wait a little while longer to see the "Where Have U Been" singer in her big-screen debut, a role that Rihanna said she relished because she got to be a total badass.

"I wanted to do something badass, but I didn't imagine it would be grungy, like straight Navy soldier, no makeup," Rihanna said of her expectations for her first movie role. "I enjoyed it.

"Battleship" opens May 18.

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

George Lindsey, Goober From Andy Griffith Show, Dies at 83

George Lindsey, who played the memorable character of Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, died early yesterday morning at the age of 83.

Lindsey, who later was a regular on the long-running country music comedy show Hee Haw, passed on at a healthcare center in Nashville, Tenn.

"George Lindsey was my friend," Andy Griffith said in a statement released on Sunday. "I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit."

George Lindsey

Noting that they last spoke a few days ago, Griffith said: "I'm happy to say that as we found ourselves in our 80s, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.' "

The Andy Griffith Show, the classic 1960s sitcom starring Griffith as the kindly sheriff of Mayberry, N.C., was in its fourth season in 1964 when Lindsey appeared as the cousin of naive gas station attendant Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors.

Lindsey's character became more prominent after Nabors left the show to star in the spin-off series Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. in 1964. R.I.P.

Toyota RAV4 EV priced up at $49,800, arriving in California 'late summer'

It's been two years since we first heard of Toyota's electric vehicle plans and the company's finally ready to talk turkey on pricing. Announced at Los Angeles' Electric Vehicle Symposium yesterday, the "fully equipped" RAV4 EV will arrive before the end of the year for a few hundred shy of 50,000 bucks. The EV will reach up to 100 miles on a single charge, which can be reportedly replenished in around six hours from a 240V charger, while LED and halogen headlights are the latest design additions. The RAV4 will go up for sale in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego -- if you're somewhere in California, you have a shot of getting one. Toyota's got all the details in a press release right after the break.
